Fenestration

Leaves with holes or splits in them — the aroid trick of removing tissue on purpose.

A single Monstera adansonii leaf seen from above, its blade cut through with a dozen elongated holes on either side of the midrib, over a net pot of sphagnum. Several Monstera adansonii leaves layered around a moss pole, each one perforated with rows of oval holes, backlit against a pale wooden wall. A Monstera adansonii leaf held flat toward the camera with a furled new leaf standing above it, the open leaf showing two ranks of long holes either side of the midrib. A Monstera adansonii climbing a mossed pole in a terracotta pot, roughly a dozen perforated leaves arranged around it, lit from one side against a wooden door. A Monstera adansonii on its pole seen close, leaves overlapping at several depths so the holes in the front ones frame the leaves behind. A Monstera adansonii in a terracotta pot on a stand, its perforated leaves spreading either side of a sphagnum pole, the whole plant roughly twice the height of the pot. A Monstera adansonii photographed square-on, a furled new leaf at the top of the moss pole and mature perforated leaves fanning out below it. The upper leaves of a Monstera adansonii, each perforated with oval holes, crowded around the top of a sphagnum pole. A single Monstera adansonii leaf filling the frame, its long holes running out from the midrib toward the margin but stopping short of it, edges catching the light. A Monstera adansonii leaf photographed straight on, the pale midrib dividing two ranks of elongated perforations of very unequal size. A small juvenile Monstera adansonii leaf at soil level, barely the size of a thumb, with only three or four holes so far, framed by the mature leaves above it. A fully grown Monstera adansonii leaf photographed close, glossy and deep green, its perforations arranged in two neat ranks that narrow toward the tip. A close crop across a Monstera adansonii leaf, the elongated holes and the veins between them filling the frame edge to edge. A small heart-shaped Monstera adansonii leaf standing above the pot rim, already carrying four holes near its midrib, with the moss pole out of focus behind. A backlit crop of a Monstera adansonii leaf, its holes reading as bright shapes cut out of the dark green blade. An abstract close crop of a Monstera adansonii leaf in which the perforations dominate the frame, pale rounded shapes against green with the veins running between them. A Monstera adansonii leaf hanging below the net pot it grows from, perforated along its whole length, the sphagnum surface visible above. A Monstera adansonii leaf lying almost flat across the frame with a net pot of sphagnum behind it, its holes arranged in two ranks either side of the midrib. A focus-stacked Monstera adansonii leaf photographed from below with a furled new leaf rising behind it, sharp from the leaf base to the tip of the spear. Two Monstera albo leaves, one half green and half pure white, the other largely white with green flecks, against a dark wall. A Monstera albo leaf split almost exactly down the midrib, deep green on one side and clean white on the other. A large Monstera albo leaf, mostly white with green sectors along one edge, held out over a pot of bark. A Monstera deliciosa leaf photographed from below, its yellow-green midrib and lateral veins lit through the blade, holes scattered either side. A broad Monstera deliciosa leaf with deep marginal splits and rows of oval holes, seen against a pale indoor background. A Monstera deliciosa leaf held toward the camera, its splits and oval holes arranged along a pale midrib. A Monstera 'Thai Constellation' leaf speckled and streaked cream over green, its holes cut along either side of the midrib. A close view along a Thai Constellation leaf, cream flecks scattered dense across the green blade between the veins. A Thai Constellation leaf hanging with one broad cream sector along its edge, oval holes cut through the green. A focus-stacked Thai Constellation leaf, one half green flecked with cream and the other a solid pale sector, sharp across the whole blade. A monstera growing outdoors, its large fenestrated leaves overlapping in dappled light.
