Climbing aroids that fenestrate as they mature. Most of what is sold as a houseplant wants more light and a chunkier mix than it usually gets.

Philodendron
A very large genus, split roughly between climbers and self-heading types. More forgiving of lower light than Monstera or Alocasia, which is most of why they became houseplants.

Alocasia
Grown from a corm rather than a simple root ball, and the only aroids here that genuinely go dormant. Most of the reputation for being difficult comes from people treating a dormant corm as a dead plant.
